A Visit To Wonderland...

Colleen Moore's Fairy Tale Castle...

“Fairy tales can come true, it can happen to you, if you’re young at heart.” ...
Lyrics from "Young at Heart".

As a young girl, I remember every summer my family would go to Chicago to visit my father's sister n' her husband. What a treat that was, for one of our many ventures would be a trip to the Museum of Science n' Industry; where my, all time favorite was to see the fairy castle. O' it was glorious... and now I remember the wonderment I felt as a child, I stood and gazed at the castle...with all my hopes and dreams locked up in those mystical moments!
You will see illustrations from every tale you've read...from Cinderella, The Three Bears to Robinson Crusoe and his man Friday, tapestries made with the tiniest stitches ever stitched, chandeliers made of gold, hung with real diamonds and emeralds and pearls, a small pistol that actually shoots, vessels n' statues dating back 4000 years ago. There is running water, magical gardens n' weeping willows.
What really amazes me is the craftsmanship that went into the castle and to think that some of these miniature objects date back to 4000 years ago. Colleen's story of when this began is worth reading. I hope you enjoy the slide show and if you get to Chicago, visit the exhibits at the Museum of Science n' Industry.

Colleen Moore in her words gives you a guided tour...
"As you go around the corner, stop and look through the clear glass in the center of the chapel window. You will see the altar, and on this altar is a little tabernacle. On top of the tabernacle you will see a beautiful golden sunburst. In the center is a glass container holding a sliver of the true cross. This was given to me by my friend, Clare Booth Luce, when she was the Ambassador to Italy and had her first audience with the Pope. He gave this to her, and she gave it to me to put in the chapel of the Fairy Castle. "

Thanksgiving Prayers

"A nation divided cannot stand," said Abraham Lincoln, paraphrasing Scripture. But with a bit of luck, some ordinary patience and understanding, and a touch of grace, it can.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Over the roads and around the lakes to grandmother's house we go. Oh, I remember those holidays, my first moments stepping into my grandparents home and getting the first wave of wonderful smells of Thanksgiving. Grandma, had baked pumpkin n' mince pies; fresh bread, vegetables n' fruit galore and of course the big stuffed turkey. The one dish I'll always remember is her caramelized sweet potatoes, which she fixed in a big cast iron skillet. I have never been able to match the flavor that I remember...but O' how I loved them!

Grandmother's Sweet Potatoes

Step 1: Boil the sweet potatoes (about 2 lbs) in their jackets in water until they are fork tender. Drain and cool slightly.

Step2: Peel potatoes and cut into slices about 1/2 inch thick.

Step3: Place in a large heavy skillet and add brown sugar (about 1/2 cup), a little *orange marmalade ( 3 to 4 tablespoons), with a dash of salt.

Step4: Dot with butter (2 to 4 tablespoons) and simmer on medium until bubbly lower heat and cook until caramelized, about 20 minutes. Serve warm n' enjoy!

*Some time you could experiment with honey, stone ground mustard, cinnamon n' nutmeg.

Wishing you and yours a blessed Thanksgiving Day,
Elizabeth

Out of the Mouths of Children...

I received this from a dear friend yesterday... for me it truly shows that our God is greater then the storm. The video has been circling the internet for a while but I wanted to share it with you now...

This arrangement of "The Battle Hymn Of The Republic" is performed by four high school choirs, plus a little kid's choir of elementary school children. I found the arrangement deeply moving. The little kids get the first verse to themselves, then the high schoolers join in. A small band accompanies the choir. The soundtrack is taken from a video made by one of the performing students father.

To this school district, It's in their honor, I make this,

The Battle Hymn of the Republic was written in 1861 by Jula Ward Howe & William Steffe. Enjoy, chills went through me as I listened and watched this video...

Without character, freedom fails...

"Unless we act now to strengthen the character of our nation’s youth — and give them the resources to succeed — the United States will not be prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century." Alma Powell ( Gen. Colin Powell's wife)
